Are you an athlete who constantly suffers from sore muscles, aches, and pains but can’t afford to take time away from a busy training schedule? At ReZults, we’ve got you covered. Specifically designed for any type of athlete, from elite professionals and performance artists to the everyday gym goer, a sports massage will help get your muscles ready for another day of activity. |
How is a sports massage different?
Compared to your typical relaxation spa massage, a sports massage uses techniques that cater specifically to the activity or sport of choice. Whether it’s dancing, running, baseball, or hockey, certain areas of the body will undergo more stress than others. A sports massage targets those spots and focuses on areas of overuse and stress to prevent injury and help the body achieve maximum performance. Techniques like stroking, kneading, tapotement, friction, and vibration are all examples of what you can expect from a sports massage.
But a sports massage isn’t generic — it’s tailored specifically to the issues you bring. From rotator cuff tightness due to repeatedly throwing a baseball, to leg strain from running, the therapist will target the massage to suit your issues.
There are two main factors that will determine what type of massage you receive: whether you’re in the training phase, or in the recovery phase.
If you’re in the training phase, your massage may be tailored to aid in the development of the body — increase flexibility and range of motion, remove knots, and overall loosen muscles to achieve higher levels of performance.
If you’re in the recovery phase, your massage therapist will help assist the healing process by using lighter techniques to loosen the body, improve flexibility, and aid post-activity recovery.
In the case of injury, your therapist will adapt the routine to assist the healing process. Massages may need to be more frequent, longer, and more focused. As the injury starts to heal, the massage can become less frequent, more intense, and deeper to stretch out the area.
Why a sports massage may benefit you
If you’re debating between a ‘relaxing’ massage or a sports massage, consider some of the benefits of a sports massage:
However, don’t expect a sports massage to be like a relaxing spa massage. In order to properly treat the ailments associated with sports activities pressure is needed, which can be uncomfortable at times. Releasing the fascia (the layer on top of the muscle) takes some work but is necessary to get the muscle to relax. Traditionally, with massages involving deep muscle work you may feel slight discomfort, soreness, or stiffness in the following 1-2 days. Fortunately, with over 16 years and 10,000 hours of massage therapy experience we have developed a unique technique that combines multiple massage modalities to prevent and avoid the discomfort usually experienced after deep tissue work. Our ReZults Sports Massage combines passive mobilization and meditative abdominal breathing to bring slack to the muscles and decrease deep tissue work discomfort.
While you may feel better after your treatment, health doesn’t stop when you leave the clinic. All massage sessions are accompanied with optional patient education to teach our clients how to play an active role in improving their health conditions and outcomes.
