Everyone knows that massages are great for de-stressing and relieving tension, but have you ever left a massage still feeling those knots you came in to get rid of?
Medical massage is a type of massage that targets and treats a specific ‘problem’ area the patient struggles with — for example, shoulder pain. There is no one-size-fits-all protocol for these massages; rather, each treatment is highly individualized to best treat the patient. The therapist will first perform a thorough assessment, and from there will form a treatment plan to best suit your needs. Whereas spa massages aim to relax and de-stress the patient, a medical massage focuses on a problem area and aims to resolve the specific ailment. So why choose a medical massage over all of the others? Also known as a clinical massage or a treatment massage, medical massages are great to help a number of problems including injuries to muscles, tendons, and ligaments. If you’ve ever suffered with pain or discomfort in a specific area that general massages just don’t target, a medical massage might be for you. |
Understanding the patient is an important component of a medical massage. Each treatment starts with an initial assessment by your therapist. During this assessment, the therapist will determine and diagnose any conditions or problems you have that you would like treated. This may be anything from localized muscle pain to a tendon or ligament injury. Individualization is key to treatment, as no two patients are alike and everyone will therefore need different care.
Other problems that medical messages can help treat include:
At ReZults, we take a clinical approach to bodywork that utilizes postural assessment, biomechanics, and active and passive release techniques to restore and maintain physical health.
What these techniques are
Postural assessment. These are conducted to gauge various postures and determine misalignments. The therapist will likely examine several standard postures: seated, standing, gait, supine, and prone. Imbalances in the base of support (BOS) are determined prior to correction of the complaint, and any imbalances or misalignments will be corrected during treatment. The body functions best when posture is correct, so an initial assessment is key to proper correction.
Biomechanics. Biomechanics is the study of how the skeletal and muscular systems work in a variety of conditions, focusing on how the body works and how it responds to various external stimuli. Why is this important for a massage therapist? Understanding how the muscles move, how joints work, and how our bodies function cohesively to produce movement is a key part of the resulting treatment.
Active release techniques. Active release techniques are a method of treating soft tissue injuries by combining manipulation and movement. It involves identifying, isolating, and targeting a specific area in order to break up any scar tissue or remove any tension that is present. In doing so, it promotes greater blood circulation to the affected area(s), removes any joint or nerve stress, and increases rate of healing. Active release techniques are great for healing injuries involving muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves.
Passive release techniques. Passive treatment methods are used as a clinical tool to treat muscle dysfunction and release tension. It uses hands-on treatment to alleviate muscle and connective tissue tightness and tension through the use of holding specific positions for a designated period of time.
While you may feel better after your treatment, health doesn’t stop when you leave the clinic. All massage sessions are accompanied with patient education to teach our clients how to play an active role in improving their health conditions and outcomes.
