DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
One of the most common massages around, deep tissue massage is a great option for patients looking for deeper muscle relaxation and pain relief, as they focus on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. Our therapist in Fort Collins uses deep tissue massages to relieve tension in chronically tight areas in the back or body such as the neck and shoulders, low back, and legs. Compared with other types of massage techniques, our Fort Collins deep tissue massage therapists use slower movement with more concentrated and deeper pressure in order to focus on areas of tension and pain. They are a great option for loosening bands of painful, rigid tissue in muscles, tendons, and ligaments by breaking down these bands (“knots”) or adhesions to relieve pain and restore movement. |

What you can expect
There are a few important things to understand before booking your back or body deep tissue massage at our Fort Collins studio. As deep tissue massages are designed to break up scar tissue and physically remove “knots” or adhesions, you can expect to feel a little bit of pain or discomfort as your therapist works on specific areas. Deep tissue massages are generally not “relaxing” like other traditional forms of massage.
The techniques used can temporarily disrupt circulation, limit range of motion, and cause inflammation. Even after your massage is complete, you may still feel some soreness or pain and experience increased inflammation or swelling for a short period of time.
But ReZults deep tissue massages for your back or body aren’t typical. We have developed a technique to perform deep tissue massages without the pain or discomfort that is usually associated with them. How? By utilizing passive movement and breath work.
Passive mobilization. This is a technique used to gently treat and release muscle tightness and tension. The therapist will move a joint through its range of motion to shorten and/or lengthen the target muscle while simultaneously using static compression as the muscle is slackened to encourage it to release without the pain felt during a traditional deep tissue massage. It is difficult and almost impossible to coax a muscle to relax in its lengthened or active state. Doing do so usually causes the patient to flex the muscle and further tighten it, working against the therapists attempts to release the muscle. Many times, the therapist will press harder and cause the patient more pain. In reality all they need to do is engage the joint to reduce the length between the muscles origination and insertion point to create slack in the muscle and gently encourage it to release.
Breath work. Deep breathing doesn’t seem like something that should be incorporated with a massage, but it’s actually a great way to maximize the benefits of a deep tissue massage and reduce pain. As deep tissue massages can work the lymphatic system and help to detox the body, deep breathing helps to promote blood flow, increase effectiveness of the lymphatic system, and support the detoxification organs. It also helps to decrease both heart rate and blood pressure, which can aid in tension release and greater relaxation. Not only that, but slow, deep breathing during a deep tissue massage can also reduce soreness and pain by releasing endorphins and bringing greater amounts of oxygen to cells.
If you’re suffering from chronic or acute pain, limited mobility, muscle tension or spasms, and/or are recovering from other injuries, a ReZults deep tissue massage for your back or full body may benefit you.
While you may feel better after your treatment, health doesn’t stop when you leave the clinic. All massage sessions are accompanied with patient education to teach our clients how to play an active role in improving their health conditions and outcomes.
