Of course not. Why not? Is it because it wouldn't work? No. In the short-term it would relieve pain in many cases. However, medical professionals don't recommend this course of action because we know that, in the long-term, it would lead to increased atrophy of the postural muscles that naturally support the low back.<br /><br />So, why do we take that approach with feet? Supportive shoes, inserts, custom orthotics--they are all doing for the feet what a back brace would do to low back postural muscles. All of these artificial support structures do the work that foot muscles would normally do. Atrophy / weakness is the unfortunate natural consequence.<br /><br />Look no further than your oldest relative's feet if you would like to see evidence of what a lifetime of wearing shoes will do to you. Compare their feet to the shape of the shoes they most often wear. You'll see that their foot has conformed to the shape of the shoe in the same way that foot-binding practices have deformed feet in China for centuries.&nbsp;<br /><br />Better yet, try comparing the feet of that oldest relative (or your own feet) to the feet of your youngest relative--the one who has worn shoes the least. That is, if you can even get that oldest relative to take off their shoes. Many elderly people have become so dependent on the artificial, external bracing of shoes that they only remove them for bathing and sleep. For some people I've worked with, decades of increasing support have led to such weak feet that they almost feel like a bag of bones. For these individuals, standing in a shower, on a hard surface, without their shoes and orthotics is the most painful thing they do on a regular basis.&nbsp;<br /><br />A lifetime of traditional, supportive shoes frequently comes with a host of problems. It often starts with plantar fasciitis or mild bunions and gradually worsens into conditions that can require surgery. That's the route that I've seen countless people take in nearly 20 years of working professionally with people's feet. There is another way. Feet can be strengthened and balanced if they're used more like our distant ancestors used them for millennia.<br /><br />In general, there are a few different paths we can take with our feet.<br /><br />1. As feet become weaker and more painful in response to the atrophy caused by shoes, we can try to add increasing amounts of support which will result in more atrophy and over the decades may eventually require surgical interventions.<br /><br />2. When feet already have enough imbalance that pain is interfering with daily functioning, a short-term intervention like a more supportive shoe, insert or custom orthotic may be useful or even necessary to get a patient out of pain. However, this can almost always be done at the same time as a foot strengthening and rebalancing program. This way, the patient can gradually get out of the orthotics, inserts or supportive shoes and into footwear that doesn't interfere with natural foot functionality.<br /><br />3. Or, we can decide to minimize--and even eliminate--our use of traditional shoes. When we do need to wear shoes, we can choose to gradually transition into a barefoot-style shoe that allows for natural foot movement in all directions. Options like Vibram 5-fingers, Vivobarefoot, Softstar Shoes, or (Colorado's own) Xeroshoes.com have a broad variety of options.<br /><br />From dress shoes to hiking boots, from sneakers to snow protection, you can now find any type of shoe you need in a barefoot style. My personal favorites are the KSO (Keep Stuff Out) models that Vibram makes and the sandals that are sold on Xeroshoes.com. A gradual transition into these shoes could involve wearing them for one hour more of normal activity per day. For more intensive exercise like running in barefoot-style shoes, you may want to consider doing Vibram's foot strengthening program over a three to four month period.<br />&#8203;<br />Personally, wearing barefoot-style shoes has been transformative for me. Before going barefoot, I was limited to doing a maximum of six hours of massage per day. Even that amount of massage frequently resulted in discomfort in my feet, low back, neck and shoulders by the end of the day. I could only practice good posture in the moments I was completely focused on it. Even the best quality, regular shoes were leading to weight-bearing through the outer heel area. I knew that my weight should be on a spot I like to call "the bubbling well." This is the English translation from the Chinese for acupressure point found there. It's towards the center of the transverse arch, just behind the balls of the feet. I could shift my weight there when I focused on it, but as soon as I focused on something else, my weight would immediately shift back to the outer heel. That's just what happens in a regular shoe. This shift led to more locked knees, tilting my pelvis forward, rounding my shoulders, holding my head forward and clenching my jaw. No wonder I had discomfort after those six hours of massage!<br /><br />With barefoot-style shoes, I'm limited by the number of hours in a day to how much massage I can do, instead of being limited by my body. I've done over 9 hours of massage spread over a 12+ hour shift and while I definitely feel tired afterwards, I am free from aches and pains I used to feel. They&rsquo;re very good at flexing and unflexing. However, she had worked with teenage boys long enough to know that adding a degree of competition and the potential for public humiliation to the equation would ensure that I put the degree of effort into it that she desired. After a sufficient crowd had gathered, she selected another boy in the class to do the arm hang at the same time as me on the pull-up bar next to mine. I did, in fact, manage to stay above the bar longer than he did but only by a couple of seconds--just long enough to make it clear that I wasn&rsquo;t a weakling. Unfortunately, I found that a side effect of doing the&nbsp;</span><em style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">flexed</em><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">-arm hang for that long is that it is ridiculously difficult and painful to straighten one&rsquo;s arms afterwards.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">That&rsquo;s an extreme example of how muscle gets &ldquo;stuck&rdquo; in a contracted position when its flexed for long enough.&nbsp; For this same reason, we typically do exercises in sets of 10 or 15 reps. Allowing the muscle to come completely out of contraction between each set reduces the likelihood that muscle fibers will get stuck in their flexed mode.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">Here&rsquo;s the most important part. Very few people realize that the same thing is happening to them--in a less extreme way--when they are in an asymmetrical resting position for an extended period of time. I wasn&rsquo;t&nbsp;</span><em style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">doing</em><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">&nbsp;anything!&rdquo; Well, so far, no one has been able to demonstrate to me how it&rsquo;s possible do&nbsp;</span><em style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">nothing</em><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">&nbsp;with their muscles.&nbsp; But I get what they&rsquo;re trying to say.&nbsp; They think that because they have been in resting positions their muscles haven&rsquo;t been working and they shouldn&rsquo;t feel pain. The problem with that viewpoint is that it ignores the fact that a muscle that&rsquo;s in a shortened (contracted) position, even at rest, is still flexed to some degree. This adds up tremendously over time!</span><br /></div>   					 				</td>			</tr> 		</tbody> 	</table> </div></div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">You&rsquo;ve noticed this, too, if you think about it. Have you ever gotten up from a sitting position or a rough night&rsquo;s sleep and felt stiffness or pain? The stiff muscles will be the ones that were in a shortened (flexed) position for too long--even though you were &ldquo;resting.&rdquo; &nbsp;Frequently, what we experience as resting is simply using our bigger, stronger muscles. We are resting our smaller, weaker muscles and that feels good when we are tired. It&rsquo;s no wonder we tend to sit and lie down in asymmetrical positions! Unfortunately, all this resting in asymmetrical positions makes the stronger muscles stronger and the weaker muscles weaker. That creates a structural imbalance that makes you more vulnerable to muscle pain and injury. Sitting for long periods of time causes the hip flexors to shorten and the normal position of the pelvis to shift. This can lead to increasing pressure on the facet joints and facet joint syndrome. Chronic imbalances can also lead to problems with the discs of the spine. Other consequences could include hip pain, sciatica and leg pain.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63); font-weight:700">Neck and Shoulder Pain: </span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">Normally the head should be stacked in a neutral position over the neck and shoulders. Desk workers commonly have a forward head posture due to slouching, a clenched jaw, and trying get closer to their monitor. The spinal facet joints of the neck have a lot of pain receptors and the abnormal position of the head for long periods of time can cause cervical facet syndrome. Cervical facet joint problems are commonly characterized by pain in the neck, shoulders, arms and hands. In many cases, people don't recognize that the pain they're experiencing is coming from their neck (cervical facet syndrome) because the pain is localized around the shoulder blades, upper back or in other areas.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63); font-weight:700">Headaches and Migraines</span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">: The unnatural position of the head and neck can lead to tension headaches or a cluster migraine. Forward head posture can also result in damage in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) which eventually results in temporomandibular disorder (TMD or TMJD) The jaw muscles can become chronically activated. This causes a chain reaction of tension in the 146 muscles in the head, neck and shoulders that compensate for the jaw joint. In this way, jaw tension can be the root cause of many common issues like neck and shoulder pain or headaches.<br />&#8203;</span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63); font-weight:700">Loss of flexibility</span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">: Sitting for long periods of time can cause some muscles to shorten, and others to be overstretched. A shortened muscle has fibrotic tissue that is stuck in a flexed position. This leaves less healthy muscle fiber available when the muscle is asked to perform a difficult task. An overstretched muscle is weakened in this imbalanced state and also more vulnerable to injury. Decreased flexibility can increase the rate of injury to imbalanced muscles, as well.<br />&#8203;</span></span><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63); font-weight:700">Psychological effects</span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">: The chronic pain associated with poor posture can cause a lack of self confidence. It can lead to feeling chronically tired or fatigued, reduced workplace effectiveness, and general malaise.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">Along with the above problems, you might experience burning sensations, tingling, or numbness. Nerves can become compressed leading to carpal tunnel syndrome, radial tunnel syndrome, or cervical radiculopathy (a pinched nerve).</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">Traditional doctors seek to treat these symptoms with </span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63); font-weight:700">pain, medication, or surgery</span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">. This route may be necessary in some cases but should be considered a last resort. That is because they have the potential to </span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63); font-weight:700">create their own problems </span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">and can even WORSEN the symptoms over time. In many cases, the solution is simple but requires dedication, discipline, and patience. There is no simple, quick fix for chronic pain because in most cases it is a result of many years of poor posture, habits, and workplace ergonomics.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">Over time you can cure your pain by learning how to work with better posture, sitting less, and arranging your workplace to be more ergonomic. Taking the time to care for yourself more often and integrating <a href="https://www.rezultsmassage.com/medical-massage.html">medical massage</a> into your life will significantly help by making you more aware of the chronic holding patterns in your muscles. It can also help you by helping you tune in to where muscle adhesions and tightness are focused in your own body. </span></span><br /><br /><span><span style="color:rgb(63, 63, 63)">I offer postural therapy and education to all of my massage patients to help address the individual root causes of of their pain.
